William Bedwell, Vicar of Tottenham, is regarded as one of the founders of Arabic studies in England. Erpenius studied with Bedwell but was later critical as his own knowledge of Arabic outgrew his colleague’s. Bedwell, a slow and meticulous scholar, faced problems in finding printers for his Arabic books. His legacy rests on only a few surviving publications.
